My rather charming family nickname was rat-hole, because apparently my brother couldn't say my name properly when I was born. I also went by Hamble (as in the Play School doll), because I was born with a fine head of curly-ish hair, like a 1950s housewife!

Ooof! I hope they have a nicer name for you now! I used to work with a guy who was the dead spit of Hamble, poor man! x

No sadly not, rat hole does still rear its ugly head every now and then! I did get called Kitty Baba as well, which was nicer. You'll maybe gather from this that my hair was a noteworthy thing when I was a baby :)

Kind of think your hair needs its own substack!

I’m not sure “pleasant” is much better than “present”. It reminds me of a school (not) friend who, when reciting a litany of adjectives for all her classmates, labelled me “harmless”.

Like, what the f—? I mean, I don’t want to be harmFUL, but talk about being dismissed.

I’m not going to repeat the nicknames I was given as a kid as I really don’t want to resurrect any of them. But our dog “Pickle” has about a hundred nicknames. He probably hates them all too, but he’s never said so.

Pickle is a great name for a dog! I have a tote bag with the word Pickle on it, randomly!

I was known as Lynn for the first 9 years of my life. I changed school then and my parents asked me what I'd like to be known as, so I chose my proper first name. But they carried on calling me Lynn until I got married at 40. That act was something I thought I'd never do and I certainly didn't think I'd take a man's name. But then the Jimmy Savile thing happened and I just got sick of the questions. I really struggle with using people's names generally, as I'm a) really worried I'll get it wrong and b) somehow find it over-familiar (loon) x
